Cough

Hi Tabbycat

It seems odd that no one can put their finger on the cause of it. Had PD for seven years and just started with the cough June last year as you know, so the mind boggles as to what the answer is!

Thanks anyway for interest. It's not uncommon for GP's to not know enough about parky meds (or other meds) and their side effects. Just been prescribed Gabapentin for sciatica and Lansoprazamole for silent reflux (hoping to rid cough) but instructions state on Gabapentin do not take indigestion meds with this medication. Back to square one!

All the best - Sheila

Hello again

If your cough is down to a parky dry mouth you are likely to have tooth problems as well. The teeth become brittle when there is a lack of saliva and break easily.

Hi everyone - next update regarding the cough, good to report that it has greatly improved believe it or not, only thing I've had different is the Gabapentin (never took the indigestion tablets for reflux) it has'nt gone completely, still have cough occassionally. Could this be a combination of speech therapy and Gabapentin?? I don't know.

Slightly relieved - Sheila

Good to hear you're improving.

I don't know what Gabapentin is - have you just started taking it, or adjusted the dosage?

Hi Tabbycat,  Gabapentin is a painkiller, I was prescribed them for the sciatica I had, GP says it reaches the nerve endings. Reading the info inside you can get addicted to them, I was told to take one the first day, two the second day and three the third day. Took one first day and felt high so just kept to the one a day until sciatica eased, I took them for about 10 days then stopped. So could the cough have been anything to do with the nerves in the throat that caused the coughing spasms. Might start taking them again to hopefully completely get rid of the damn thing

Sheila

So the cough started after you stopped the Gabapentin?

Hi Tabbycat

I had the cough before I started taking the gabapentin (pain killer which reaches the nerve ends), I was taking the gabapentin and my cough eased a little, which made me wonder if the gabapentin was helping it and if it was a nervous cough that I had. But have not taken any more and have bought some mucus cough mixture instead to see how that works for me

Sheila

Hello all  I am almost  afraid of saying this but OH cough has not been so bad over these past few weeks.  I am hoping that the Omeprazole and Peptac have begun to work better.  When a tickle starts he often has a spoonful of honey which eases it most times.  He does have the occasional bad bout of coughing and choking but it doesn't go on for as long as it did.  Nothing else has changed to account for this improvement.  I am keeping everything crossed that it doesn't go worse again and I think telling you this might give you some hope.  Best wishes

Hi erscar.

Hope your husband is coping better with his cough now.

I have taken medication for reflux for about three years. Eighteen months ago, I had a slight cough when I began eating a meal, and sometime just before. This seemed to cause my nose to run, and I had to keep blowing it thoughout the meal. I was given hay fever tablets, and nasal spray. Neither did any good.
I was diagnosed early this year, and now believe this was caused by the onset of pd. No specialist will admit this has anything to do with pd, and it continues today interrupting almost every mealtime. I say almost, because there are odd times when I can have a meal in peace, my nose only running as I finish. So it`s not all bad....

Hello Erscar and JohnnyD, my cough is still around after a year gone June, and can still be persistent at times. GP prescribed reflux tablets now, they help a little but I still have sessions when I cough, and choke and sometime bring back food. This cough is spadmodic and can start at any time, and I mean anywhere and any time, it makes my eyes water, makes my nose run and chok eand makes my voice go funny. I still wish somewhere someone will find an answer and give me some peace from it!

Sheila

Sorry to hear you're still coughing, Sheila. I hoped it would have buggered off by now!

JohnnyD, I seem to have a permanently runny nose too. I blame meds for everything, it's just a shame that we can't function without them.

My sentiments exactly Tabbycat I wish it would bugger off!

Seeing PD nurse in August about it but bet that will be a waste of time!

Hi All

OH still has cough with choking, sneezing and running nose at times  From waking up, he does  a lot of  throat clearing - feeling as though something  is there that needs to come up but won't.This started some weeks ago  but is nothing like as bad since he took a spoonful of Peptac before bed.   The coughing etc still happens at times but since taking the Omeprazole, it has been much better and doesn't happen as often.  It seems to me that it is just another symptom to suffer.  At least, it is nothing like as bad as it was although he still will not risk having a meal anywhere but at home.

I have the Parky bark… However I found on YouTube lots of clips about Black Seed oil, i bought a bottle and it really helps… I also have a sea salt spray, i squirt that up each nostril and allow the liquid to run down my throat. That clears the catarrh that lingers at the back of my throat… Strepsils are always handy too…

Hi Rozrr - Hope you really have found something to kill or cure this blinding cough, I’ll try anything once cos I’ve given up on everything else. Will let you know how I get on!!
