Hi CC and others.
Like you, my first bike was a Bantam (a 125) and I still have a 1100 Honda. In between times I've had other bikes mentioned, including a '72 A65L, as well as various other Japanese and British bikes. Now I have a 1935 Model 18 Norton, a 1951 Velocette MAC, a 1957 D1 Bantam, a 1959 Norton Dominator 99, a 1959 slimline framed Triton with a T120R pre-unit engine, a 1969 BSA Starfire, two 1974 Triumph Trident T150Vs (my favourite bikes) and a Honda ST1100, which is getting a bit heavy for me and may have to be replaced with something like a W650.
You'll appreciate my reaction when I was diagnosed. Another year and I'll be having to renew my now three year restricted licence. My symptoms are fatigue, tremor in the left arm and impaired executive cognitive function, which makes complex jobs on the bike difficult to impossible. I had to retire from my job. I always thought it would have helped me to be able to talk to other bikers with PD, especially when I was first diagnosed. I had so many questions.
Problems have included not having the strength or energy to kick start the bigger bikes like the Domi or Trident. For a while I wasn't confident going runs in case I couldn't, so I made sure that at least one mate would be there to start my bike if necessary. Now I know that I can usually make myself do it, provided the bike starts easily enough.
The weakness in my left arm caused problems with the heavy clutch on the Trident, so I changed the ramp mechanism and cable to help. I also fitted an electric starter, which has been brilliant.
It bothers me that other newly diagnosed bikers will be going through what I, and presumably you guys, went through, and I'd been thinking it would be a good thing to be able to provide support or advice. This posting could obviously help with that but I've been wondering about a Facebook page, which would be easier to find in a search. It might not attract many people or create much interaction but it would be there for those that need it when they need it, wherever they are in the world.
Anyone have any thoughts on that?
