I have also read some papers which state that early start on DA's or Levodopa can lead to neuroprotection.
Rhino: do you find your meds get you through the 12 hour gap between 8pm and 8am without too many problems?

When to start meds is a purely personal decision
NO existing meds halt PD, and their efficacy and longevity are questionable (leaving aside the side effects that come with them )
My advice is to scour forums in the UK and USA and google incessantly to come up with your own answers.
The current trial underway for Cogane is in my [u]personal[/u] opinion worth consideration for those who haven't started meds. It holds the promise to stop or even reverse the decline IF successful.
