He took her hand as she arrived,
Helped her on her way,
Such a long time it seemed to him,
Since that long past day,
That day when he could say no more,
Not shout her name, nor call.
He struggled, failed to draw a breath.
With darkness he would fall.
And now she'd come to join him,
Afraid of the unknown,
She'd tried to stay despite her pain.
Finally she'd flown.
She'd left the safety of her nest
In darkness, without bearing,
Confused and lost, all alone,
She reached his love and caring.
With arms outstretched, he welcomed her,
From darkness into light.
The tears they flowed from both of them,
For one last time that night.
Hand in hand, they set forth,
Young in spirit once more.
A light, it shone above their heads,
As they entered Heaven's door.
