THE RUGBY WORLD CUP 2015.
The excitement builds ( for some ) the hype is building, hopes are building, the 'National' newspapers are devoting more & more column inches to the Rugby Gods of England and the occasional column inch to the rest of the home nations - not that I'm bitter about it you understand - Wales have been written off ( the highest placed Home Nation at the last World Cup & most successful team in the Six Nations Championship
since the 2011 World Cup, and the majority of the series winning British Lions ) Ireland, apparently, are a shadow of the Six Nations Champions of 2014/5 and now don't deserve their World no. 2 spot, and Scotland , well, they do have a team but you read next to nothing about them.
As far as the opening game on Friday is concerned Fiji are huge in size, but England have huge confidence in themselves and home advantage, so I guess that they will just win, but Fiji can't be dismissed as 'irrelevant' they also play some very good rugby, and they will inevitably hand out some big hits?
Pool A looks to be the group of the World Cup with England, Wales and Australia battling it out to finish in the top two to reach the quarter-finals and Fiji being dangerous enough to cause an upset. The pressure will be on the hosts England, and the Rugby Championship winners Australia, so Wales will be able to slip in under the radar, which is how they like it. My prediction is that Wales will go through to the next round with the Wallabies - that'll upset a few no doubt?
Really looking forward to the next six weeks ( one in Denmark , new granddaughter 'Betty' born yesterday in Copenhagen, so iPad app to the ready ) and even looking forward to watching the England games - I'll be supporting their opponents, naturally !
I think that I may have already posted this one?
Poetry in motion
that is the first choice Wales Rugby Team
But don't be fooled by the English press & get the notion
That with injuries now, they're not best that's ever been
They still have to go quite a way of course, and plenty
To better the Rugby Gods from the seventies
With Sir Gareth, Phil and JPR
They took the game on so very very far
King Barry, JJ, Merv the swerve and so many more
They played so sweetly to show most other teams the door
They were the very best Rugby team then
In the glorious seventies way back when
The game was played with a great deal of skill
Get back to that level , well I doubt that it will
But now these boys with three Grand Slams in 7 years
And the Championships brought Welsh Rugby fans so often to tears
OK, the World Cup prep. is working out not
Sifting & sorting & headaches there will be a lot.
With the top players injured ,the new Welsh game
With different tactics & new game plans - maybe Welsh only by name
But enter Mike Philips a No 9 to send fear
To any teams taking part in the World Cup this year
Another Moriaty ,brought back for chances new
nothing to fear from England or Oz, Fiji or 'U'
So remember Boys the history and triumphs and the heroes recall
And we know that you will fight hard & give it your all
We'll support you for ever - go all the way this time of asking
And capture that World Cup and once more in glory be basking
Mike 700 - Welsh to the core!
