I will investigate him thanks AB, I love crime books and psychological thrillers best so it sounds good.

Heard on a radio prog. called "the arts & how they was done - the Bronte sisters & how they done their novels" (I think the prog is very funny)
(The sisters read aloud to their father the opening passage of their novels, written to prevent the possibility of the loss of the parsonage )
C: It was a dark & stormy night as I rushed across the dales. Oh Mr Rochester, Oh Mr Rochester
E: It was a dark and stormy night as I rushed across the moors. Oh Heathcliff, Oh Heathcliff
A: It was a dark & stormy night as I rushed across the Hall. Oh Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Oh Tennant of Wildfell Hall

Hi all,
Reading habit has slipped again, I blame the light evenings and other things to do.
Not to worry, come September we'll be posting like mad again!
Just wanted to draw your attention to a radio programme next week which may be worth a listen :
A Hundred Years of Mervyn Peake on Radio 4 Thursday next week, 7th July at 11.30 am.
A profile by his children on the centenary of his birth. Recalls their childhood on the Isle of Sark. They also look over diaries , paintings and sketches in remembrance of his artistic legacy.
Sister Claire talks about his final years.
If anyone does listen , please report back so others who are not able to listen at that time can share your thoughts.
Now then, put your deck chairs up , turn your back on the weeds, and READ !
Happy reading all
Lorna.

Hi Abd,
Little Miss Bossy () says Thank you!
Little Miss Bossy () says Thank you!
I turned my back on everything last week and read two books
SISTER 'Rosamund Lupton'. The Sunday Times Best seller
The unshakable belief of a sister when her sibling goes missing.
You are drawn into the story immediately which I like. Rosamund has an uncomplicated and direct style, much appreciated. It was a compelling read but annoyingly as I have found a lot lately I guessed fairly early on who the villain was and the ending to a point. Nevertheless I really enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. The Daily Mail compared Rosamund to Daphne Du Maurier
ROOM 'Emma Donoghue' Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2010
The imprisonment of a mother and child for five years in one small room
Compelling - yes! Shocking - yes! Again couldn't put it down. It filled me with emotion. Pity, anger, heartache, empathy on both counts and relief. Very very moving.

Jc that's most odd I re-read Room yesterday. I had the same reaction as you, but 2nd time around I was struck by the way ED conveyed ,by use of language as well as description, the difference between Room & World. Also the nagging suspicision that without ON, Room could be a safer, happier place to be. But so practically impossible that the dangers & fears of World have to be met along with it's joys
In a massive effort to retain some essence of brain function I am in the second year of an MA in Philosophy with the OU. This is my third degree: you would hope that I should know better.
In order to aid my essay and eventual dissertation writing I have a great piece of kit: Dragon software: speech recognition system.
Plus I have a kindle. So absolutely determined am I not to become beaten by all aspects of this bloody disease, I struggle to read the most stodgy stuff and
I LOVE IT.
By the way, I found ROOM a voyeuristic, sick account which has been lifted from the topical press.

Hi.
I've heard that Dragon
1. Is slow
2. Makes everything else slow
3. Soaks up all of your processing and memory resources
4. Has trouble with regional accents
Any comments?

The version of Dragon that I had - 7 - did take up a lot of memory (had to read that x2 Ray, thought you were casting aspersions on my personal capacities!) It required "training" so was slow & found my accent incomprehensible at first. But with frequent use it improved.
However, I am told that later versions (10 onwards) are much improved & that these problems have been addressed

Dragon, has, more than any single thing revolutionised my life.Since my second degree is an M.Sc. in Linguistics,I thought I knew shit about all this stuff.
After taking 12 mins. to initially train it to recognise my dulcit tones I cried when I saw what it could do.
Basically, if you can operate Word, you can do this.
As for the Kindle: go guys.

Mrs T, I found your assessment of ROOM intriguing though take your point re press.
You don't think then that the book could in any way reach the hearts and minds of people hitherto oblivious of such privation, unable to imagine the suffering and ensuing mental health implications.

I really think that a better and more honest novel of the genre is : The diary of Ann Frank.
Room became cheap and opportunistic. Just a point of view though.
Any more books? I love talking books.

What sort of subject presses your buttons Mrs T
oaky, confession time. Am a real snob when it comes to reading, partly because it is now so difficult, I feel that it all has to count somehow.
A superb book, writtten through the eyes of a child is , 'the curious incident of the dog in the nightime'. I found myself shouting at it, throwing it across the room and of course the mandatory weep.
I have found myself rereading 'classics', ' to the lighthouse', ' tale of 2 cities', 'oscar and lucinda', 'emma', 'vile bodies'......................
A classic to one person is potential trash to another: the discussion is fun though.

I too have read The Curious Incident.... It gave me a better insight into the mind of the autistic child.
Have you read; We Need To Talk About Kevin.
Very disturbing, a difficult read and again I guessed the outcome!!

Funny you should mention that one: next on my list!
I'm still reading Frank Richards' "Billy Bunter Among The Cannibals".
Has anyone else here read it?
