I totally agree with your comment re driving, as when my husband does drive (once in a blue moon for 1mile or so). He is not happy that he can get through gaps etc also he is not able to do 2 things at once ...drive and turn the radio down or drive and talk to me. I am luck to be able to drive and enjoy doing so although there are many narrow lanes near us and even when I'm driving at 15-20 mph he is quite nervous. This fits your comments to a tee.
being passenger is actually worse because he perceives the problem without being able to do anything about it. suggest he sits in the back seat!
Only just come across this trhead and I am very interested in all you have said .
Unfortunately I do not drive I haven.t for a very long time and at 74 is too late for me to start again . After my prompting my husband gave up driving because I had started to close my eyes too often when going past other traffic , he would keep veering into the centre of the road .. He wasn'r aware of what was happening .
But the sensible man that he is he listened to me and we sold the car ..
Going back to walking/running . My husband is 77 and we have been married for 53 years . Even going back as far as before we were married he use3d to tell me he couldn't walk up hills only run . I was always asking him to slow down , I found it difficult to keep up with him . When we danced he would suddenly change direction al,most like changing gear . Unfortunatley he isnt up to the dancing anymore . Wish he was . But I will never give up , In fact I have been jiggling with his Sinemet doses recently and I am finding after 4 years , an improvement and I am hoping it will improve even further .

Lot of stuff with pd is unknown - moving or not can be on a smile , a hello or just the sun coming out . Very slight changes in mind do this . If we feel good we move better or bad - drugs dont get in so good so we go rigid . These unknowns make me call pd partially a spiritual illness . Boost dopamine levels by whatever pathway (many in brain) or man made pd meds spirit is freed & we move . Nothing to do with god nessascarily . But wether we are the scientist or the shamen or anything in between we have to acknowledge spirit exists . Science often not likes this as spirit not measurable . Running is a good thing - sometimes we should not try to understand - just accept . The mind will never reveal all its secrets but you have to admit there is less spiritulness about these days , the certanty and unnaturalness of the planet doesnt allow for it . Maybe this is why more people are getting pd now days . All i am saying is anything that frees the spirit will move us . Could be cycling , running , kicking a football , singing etc . Especially when we add a reaction which is allways faster than brains thinking . Spirit is also kind of a reaction - cant be planned , is not a "thing" . If you cant walk but need to cross a road is best to start running from a kneeling position then you wont fall . I have also thought that us with parkinsons are maybe mutating as a species to try to tap into more spiritualness in an effort to adapt to our harsh world - not asking anyone to take what i have written to much to heart , just my thoughts - thats all
i have found this side of my PD very interesting
i struggle to walk when my drugs are "off" as the PD affects my right side i have to do a sort of skip to pop my right leg forward, when my drugs are on and i am calm i can walk fine but like many others if the enviroment changes or i get stopped or talk to someone i seize right up...
i can run no problem and should really make an effort to get into jogging (never been a big fan of it!!)
but cycling is amazing i have always cycled mountain and road and i regularly cycle the 22mile trip from home to work sometimes both ways, i have noticed recently though that my right foot (toes and outside edge) are starting to cramp up and i am getting an unequal pedal stroke which in turn gets me into the vicious PD stress circle, i am planning to see a bike fitting physio to get this sorted...
but to add this to the debate i can always walk fine backwards... bit funny looking though but it has got me out of a few freezing tight spots especially on the tube here in london (which i find i cant use now without freezing)
im 32 male by the way
oh and i have seen a youtube video of michael j fox iceskating amazingly
thanks
paul

hi again
just properly read the previous post, re the "spiritual" path
this kind of thing really winds me up it is very dangerous and misleading to suggest that any medical condition has anything at all do to with anything other than hard proven scientific facts
PD is a disease caused by a biological malfunction, you can help yourself like everyone else on this planet by looking after yourself and all aspects of your health PD or not related thats a given
spiritualism is a dangerous and meaningless word and i dont think it or any religious musings should be allowed on this forum, your faith and beliefs are a private matter so should be kept that way
perhaps we should use telekinesis to get us moving, ill suggest that to my neurologist
