One of my earliest memories was the rent man calling and my Mother and me hiding behind the settee, because we couldn't pay that weeks rent. It got paid the week after so no harm done. It reminds me how little money we had, but how much we enjoyed life.
We lived on a council estate and it was the happiest community I have ever lived in. Everyone was in the same boat and there was no one upmanship.
It taught me to look after things and appreciate their value.
We had so much fun...........an old cardboard box for wickets was put up in the middle of the road and within half an hour all the dads were out playing with us while the mums sat on garden walls chatting.
If I won the lottery tomorrow I could not be happier than I was in those days.
