Advanced Parkinson's and delusions

Hello,

I’m new. My dad has had Parkinson’s disease for over 20 years and it’s pretty advanced. He has had compulsive behaviour ongoing (rectified slightly by change to meds). In the last week he has been suffering with delusions mainly about people getting the house but also aimed at my mother, infidelity, trying to get rid of him etc. A couple of questions…anyone with experience of caring for someone suffering delusions? Any experience of who we can get some support from with this? Lastly any experience here as to whether reduction in duadopa actually improves this side effect and how long should we sit tight and see if it does start working ? Thanks.

Hi L04,

Welcome to the Forum. Very sorry to hear about what your dad’s been going through. You can read more about delusions in Parkinson’s patients on our website, here: https://www.parkinsons.org.uk/information-and-support/hallucinations-and-delusions-side-effect

We’ve also got tips on how family, friends and carers can help Parkinson’s patients to manage their delusions: https://www.parkinsons.org.uk/information-and-support/your-magazine/tips/managing-hallucinations-and-delusions-tips-family

We’d also recommend you contact our Helpline, as they’ll be able to advise you further. You can reach them via email at [email protected], or call free on 0808 800 0303. Lines are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm, and on Saturday from 10am-2pm.

Hope this helps.

hi there ive been there my head was all over the place took me of the meds all together that i was on had to start again more or less talk to your pd nurse

Thanks. I feel if they take dad off the meds we will have a Parkinsonian crisis but there is no further treatment options other than an antipsychotic he is refusing. Was Ur delusions/ hallucinations due to a particular medication and if so do you mind me asking what it was?
