I’ve been trying to understand something I’ve noticed from time to time — those brief periods when your mood suddenly drops and you don’t feel quite like yourself. It made me curious enough to start reading about brief feelings of depression and how they can differ from simply having a rough day. What I’m particularly curious about is the difference between an occasional period of feeling low and symptoms that might be worth discussing with a doctor or mental health professional. Things like suddenly losing motivation, feeling unusually down, having less interest in normal activities, or just not feeling like yourself for a while can be difficult to interpret, especially when the feeling doesn’t last very long.I’ve come across different information while researching the subject, but I’d be interested in hearing how other people understand these short periods of low mood. For anyone familiar with this, what signs usually make brief feelings of depression different from an ordinary bad day or temporary stress? Is the duration most important, or do the intensity and effect on everyday life matter more?I’d appreciate hearing general experiences or information about what people typically look out for.
Hello, firstly we’re really sorry you’ve been experiencing these symptoms. Please know you’re not alone and we’re here for you, and we’re glad you’ve asked.
You’ve mentioned possibly discussing things with a GP, and this would be our main suggestion. Your doctor will be able to work with you to figure out the cause of your symptoms and then discuss options for managing the symptoms that can hopefully make life feel a bit easier for you.
It’s worth mentioning that it’s normal for your mood to go up and down because of how your Parkinson’s symptoms can change, either over the course of a day or over time. These changes don’t always mean that you have depression. Sometimes, these feelings may be related to changes in your Parkinson’s medication.
