Burning Mouth Syndrome

Good morning,

My wife has suffered with Burning Mouth Syndrome for 19 years and has tried many different medications unsuccessfully. One big problem was being woken up many times at night with the pain then doing various things to reduce it (water, lip balm etc). She spoke to the doctor again requesting another pain-relief tablet, but that didn’t work, plus the side effects were horrendous. Then the doctor suggested Mirtazapine 15mg. It is essentially a pain-relief tablet, but also used to aid sleeping issues. She only takes it at night, and has now been on it for just over a week and it really helps! She still wakes up with a dry mouth, but no stinging, so she can get back to sleep quickly. Also, because she has slept better, she is better able to face the day. She is a different woman; in much better spirits and more energy! Her doctor was delighted and is going to submit an article in the Lancet medical magazine!

I hope you can enter this on your forum as I’m sure it will help others.

Hi Phil, that’s good to know and I hope it continues to alleviate the issues going forward.
If it’s of any help, I too suffer from a burning/stinging feeling in my mouth which I thought was down to increased mouth breathing. Anyhow, I’ve been using Biotene mouthwash (available on prescription) for a few days and it too helps to alleviate the stinging.

Regards,
Sean
