'cancer-promoting' protein

I don't fully understand what the discovery is about, but what I do understand it is that they found a protein that protects the brain and that it can be in clinic in a few years:

hmm. something strange going on in the state of denmark!

2004 - article saying this protein is neuroprotective.
When a cell is transformed to a cancerous cell, genes which did their job in growing the organ and have now beeen switched off are once again switched on to make proteins which make the cell divide and proliferate (out of the usual controls). The Danes have identified one of these division enhancing proteins which can cause division of neurons. If they put a functioning copy of that gene into the substantia nigra on a viral vector will it regenerate working neurons............without causing cancer?
