I would like to say how absolutely amazing Southmead Hospital were last week.

I have been waiting 15 months for my DBS, and having got fed up with waiting, and were told “it should be this year…” we
booked 3 weeks in Cyprus. Three days into our only holiday this year, I saw the number of the hospital on my phone. I was told there was a cancellation did I want it. I said “let me change our flights and I will confirm. Flights changed in a flash and off home we headed. Southmead in Bristol were absolutely amazing. Nothing was too much trouble, they explained everything, the consultant was fantastic . Ten days post surgery i still can’t believe it’s happened. My many many thanks to all the team that welcomed me, looked after me, cut my hair, fed me YOU WERE ALL AMAZING.

Sorry for not really replying to your post. Though I am pleased to hear a positive experience, Has anyone had D.B.S and been awake for most of the procedure? I am on my D.B.S journey. I have met the consultant and the surgeon, at the end of January I will be assessed off my meds. I believe this is to see what symptoms the D.B.S will be able to relieve. Then if that is beneficial, I will have a cognitive test and a brain scan. I am trying to get my head round that one I will have to have my whole head shaved and two I will be awake with my head in a vice for approximately three hours. I am scared I might freak out. Looking for reassurance. NO horror stories please

Hi @Sue_Worsdall I had DBS surgery in September and was awake for the procedure which was fine. I didn’t have my whole head shaved though - just the areas they needed to access. Have you watched the videos of Jo’s story on this website? Her surgery was different as she was asleep but the rest of the footage is very informative about what is involved.

Good morning Sue … I’m 70 & have atypical Parkinson’s. My symptoms are “freezing”, the inability to walk more than 50 yards & balance problems. I have a tremor which is not bad enough to bother me. I can’t go for walks & I can’t play golf which were my life up until a few years ago. I have nightmares when I sleep & often cannot sleep at all. During the day I am impacted by fatigue.

I would have any operation that would get my mobile self back, If I had to give a mark to my quality of life I’d go for 4/10.

What mark out of 10 would you give your current quality of life?

It is not about how long we live but the quality of life we have.

I feel very envious that you have this chance to get most of your old self back.
Yes of course it’s scary, I get that.

Thank you for positive feed back. I will not chicken out if I pass all the tests, as my fluctuations are really bad. I am most scared of moving if I panic and end up hurting myself x
