Diet

I’ve had PD for at least 5 years. Currently taking Co-careldopa, Opicapone which helps wear off and recently started Amantadine for dyskinesia.

I’ve read a lot about PD and your diet, keto, balanced, full protein, eat more of this and that and avoid these etc. You get my drift. TBH, it is an area that interests me (if it helps ease symptoms), BUT, there is so much conflicting information, I’ve no idea where to start.
Are you on a specific diet to help with managing PD? Would you kindly explain what it is, results etc.
Cheers. D

I think diet will vary massively from person to person - we each have our own metabolism etc. However, a definite issue is where proteins inhibit/conflict with medication, making it far less effective. It’s an issue that gets worse as your PD advances. My science is pretty bad, but in layman’s terms the food proteins use the same pathways in the brain that medication wants to use, so they act as a blocker.

Googling nutrition issues is a minefield of conflicting unsubstantiated claims, in my experience. But the protein thing is very real, scientifically proven and common amongst Parkies.

Hi, ive been big into nutrition and fitness all my life. Ive only been recently diagnosed with parkinsons disease, so hard to comment on a personal note what works but you need to eat the rainbow, plenty of fruit and veg and keep youre protein high. As long as you eat protein an hr ir 2 before or after youre meds, they wont affect the absorption. Its all linked to youre gut microbiome you have to look after it and it will look after you, its classed as youre 2nd brain. As we age we need more protein to preserve our muscles, so i wouldnt comprimise on that at all. Plenty of polyphenols in youre diet and high fibre. Keep well hydrated, i only drink hydrogenated water as its better for the neuroplaticity of the brain. Also i take antioxidant supplements to help get rid of free radicles. At the moment i think its hard to say what helps but all these things ive researched should help, only time will tell but for me im going to be as healthy physically and nutritionally as a possibly can.
