Hello. Has anyone had a recent holiday in New Zealand and hired a car using a 3-year UK driving licence?
I’ve Googled this and seen contradictory answers so hoping some one will know the answer!!
Thanks

Hello PeterT750,
Our forum members may be able to offer you some peer to peer advice on this. But till then we’d definitely recommend reaching out to the DVLA as they may be able to give you the most accurate advice on this.

Evening … Each car hire company might have different rules. I would suggest contacting the Car hire firm you intend to use & ask whether they allow 3 year medical car driving licences for hire and car insurance. I would expect they do. The car hire firms are the only ones that would see your driving licence unless the police stop you.
Have a great holiday.
I have been to NZ a number of times & had a great time. Best holiday destination in the World.
Best wishes

I’ve seen mixed answers too, but generally, you should be able to hire a car in New Zealand with a 3-year UK driving licence. Most rental companies require a full, valid licence held for at least 12 months. It’s always a good idea to check with the specific rental company for any additional requirements or restrictions. Safe travels!
Thank you for the replies - I will contact the hire car companies
Hi
If your 3 year licence is a renewal and not your first licence you go onto View or share your driving licence information - GOV.UK and get a code which gives your full driving licence record that you can give to the hire company for them to check. The code is only valid for 21 days so get it less than 21 days before your hire date.
I’m travelling to America in 3 weeks on a 3 year licence due to expire 2026 and will be taking my code.
