Drooling

Hi, I wonder if anyone can offer advice on drooling. Is it down to PD? My husband has started to do this when he’s dozing off in a chair. It’s very unpleasant and distressing and I’d like to know if anyone else has experienced it? He’s had PD for more than 6 years at least. Thanks for any advice.

I believe this is due to Parkinson’s and ascribed to the brain not giving the signal to swallow. Mine is much more pronounced when asleep.

Hi Rayell, yes my husband does it when he’s asleep or just dozing in the chair with his head down. Any tips or advice on how to minimise it would be great from others reading this too. Thank you

My mum does this when she has another infection last week it was a uti, or when there’s some other issue stopping the pd meds working like constipation.

My nurse told me this week (I’m newly diagnosed) that some people suck sweets during the day to try and build the mouth and throat muscles that are affected by Parkinson’s

Hi Rayell, thanks for that tip.
Will get him some sugar free sweets and give it a try. At the least they may even help with his constipation! Thank you. Jean

Just had quick look at PD website and there’s some lip exercises to try. So he can give them a go. Also said about the sweets and chewing gum throughout the day. Fingers crossed these may help as it’s a most unpleasant symptom of this very nasty disease.

Hi all, still hoping to get some advice on this. I’ve been reading about Botox and wondered if anyone had tried it for this most unpleasant symptom? I’m also concerned as PD website mentions it is more often evident in late stage PD. This has worried me as my husband was only diagnosed 6 years ago. Naturally he’s starting to feel very down and self conscious with it and I’m also very worried. Any advice would be most welcome. Thank you.

Have you received any advice which has helped? Sorry to drag this back up from April but i just had to check. Thanks

Hi, I contacted PD nurse and she has given us a referral to the SALT clinic (speech and language therapy) in October. There are mouth exercises you can do too. I think I read on one of the posts that the PD nurse prescribed them eye drops but you drop them under the tongue. No idea how successful this would be though!. I’ll post back once we’ve seen them at SALT. If you’re having this same unpleasant symptom then I hope you get some help with it. Regards Jean

I hardly notice it during the day but it sometimes happens at night when I am asleep
