Can anyone give me advice on eating equipment. I have problems using a spoon. knife and fork are ok, but when I turn my hand to use a spoon it brings on my tremors, and I am unable to grip. I beleive there is special utensel on sale and wondered if anyone can advise on a particular make which is best. thanks
Hi, @Dave3. Thank you for posting this. We’re sure that many people in our community can relate to finding that tremor or grip issues make using certain items such as cutlery really difficult.
There are specially designed utensils that can help by improving grip, balance or stability. Some people find things like weighted cutlery or built-up grip utensils (thicker, easier to hold handles) useful.
If you’re interested, we sell a ‘good grip’ cutlery set on the website, and you can just purchase the spoon on its own, if that’s helpful.
It’s also a great question to raise with your occupational therapist (if you have one), as they can recommend and fit tools that match your specific challenges.
Hopefully others here will share what has worked for them too. But if you’d also like one-to-one support with this or other daily living aids, our helpline is here to help: 0808 800 0303.
Take care, and hope you find something that makes mealtimes a bit easier!
You may find a self levelling spoon helpful. In a nutshell the bowl of the spoon stays level whatever angle your arm/hand is at. It may be that you can use such a spoon successfully without the need to turn your arm/hand overmuch; this may in turn, reduce or minimise the risk of inducing your tremor. There are several different types and I copied this link where A1 gives an overview of the different types, which you may find helpful as a start point.
Good luck with your search and if you’ve time, perhaps you could let us know how you are getting on.
You are very welcome and I would be most interested in how you get on. Good luck with your search, I hope you find something that suits.
Just to mention, because I forgot when writing my reply, weighted cutlery can used successfully to dampen tremors or shaking when using utensils but some can find it tiring. The extra weight may be small but can take more effort as you would be lifting your arm/hand against gravity. I kniow that may sound a bit OTT when only talking about knife, fork or spoon, but it is as well to know about it anyway.

PS I have absolutely no idea why the link came up in a foreign language, it was in English when I copied it
My personal trainer has just come up with a suggestion that may help you. She has a client who holds and squeezes a small stress ball in one hand while eating. The ball acts as a distraction for the brain and her tremor is lessened. It doesn’t have to be a ball - as long as it is small to fit in your hand. It might be worth a try. I am going to give it a go myself to see in what sort of situations this ‘distraction technique’ might work
