Father in hospital

Hello everyone

I am reaching out for advice. My father has stage 5 and has been in hospital for 5-6 weeks. His accute problems have been stabilised (pneumonia etc) but his condition has declined rapidly. He has lost all mobility, he’s delirious or asleep 95% of the time and has refused food for 3 weeks and says he has had enough. He is also refusing medicine and is having trouble swallowing. The hospital is talking about disharging him as they cannot treat him further. We really don’t know what to do next. I’d appreciate any advice or your thoughts, many thanks.

Hi @dogeared, we are really sorry to hear that and understand how concerning that must be for you. Please know we are here to help.

We have some information on our website for carers of people with Parkinson’s which may help you support your father if he is discharged from hospital. You can find it here: Supporting someone with Parkinson's | Parkinson's UK

If you need to speak to someone, we have a free, confidential helpline on 0808 800 0303 where you can speak with our specialists who can answer your questions and give you the support you need.

We hope this is useful. Please take care and reach out if there is anything we can do.

Many thanks, I will take a look at that. We were advised yesterday that the hospital want to discharge him. There appears to be a social worker involved but the person is very ellusive. We want to find out if we can get support with funding for his care and if he should be in a care home or hospice.

@dogeared Is there any update on your dad,? When f-i-l was stage 5 he was given liquid meds, far easier to get down. But I can understand his reluctance to continue given how awful this condition can get.

My thoughts are with you x
