Finding best care home for PD

Dad is 82 and recently went into a care home for respite care. He has PD and dementia. Unfortunately he had falls in the night and has now broken his wrist. He spent 3 days in A&E and the frailty team discharged him to a different care home for a 4 week assessment period (fully funded). His mobility is now very poor and his dementia is awful. At the end of the 4 weeks we will probably need to find self funded permanent care. He cannot return home because his partner died during the respite care and he cannot live alone. How can we find the best care home for him? Whenever I search for homes the one where he broke his wrist comes out as best, but we were not satisfied with the care he received there.

Hi @JulesB845, and welcome to the forum. Thank you for sharing your message here.

This is a difficult position to be in, especially with everything changing so quickly.

When looking for a care home for someone with Parkinson’s and dementia, it’s useful to focus on whether the home can meet your dad’s needs day-to-day. Some homes have more experience with Parkinson’s and dementia than others, and that can make a difference. We have a page about care homes here that may be helpful: Home care and care homes | Parkinson's UK

If you can, try to visit a few homes and look closely at things like how staff support the mobility of residents, how they prevent falls etc. You can ask questions about staffing levels at night too.

If you have access to a Parkinson’s nurse, they may be able to support you with options and help identify homes that can meet higher care needs.

Please remember we’re here if you need to chat things through with our team. You can reach us on 0808 800 0303, and no question is too big or too small.

Sending our warmest wishes
