Fybogel or laxido?

One of the first manifestations of Parkinson’s appears to be the onset of constipation- this may appear several years before more the characteristic movement symptoms. For this reason GP,s tend to treat it in the conventional way with laxatives quite often recommending an increase in roughage afforded by bulking agents such as FYBOGEL rather than osmotic laxatives such as MOVICOL or LAXIDO. My own experience is that increased dietary fibre may exacerbate constipation if slow gut transit is the problem and stool has a tendency to dry out leading to potential impaction. I would be grateful for the experience of other Parkinson’s sufferers have had as to which approach turned out be the most effective for them. Failing that someone might point me in the direction of similar posts on this subject.
Thanks

Hi @GROBER,

I’m sorry to see no one has stopped by yet to weigh in with their own experiences. We definitely do have members who use Fybogel, Movicol, or Laxido - and many have tried multiple!

I would recommend checking out the forum, if you haven’t already done so. We have a number of threads on each: Fybogel, Movicol, and Laxido.

You can also reach out to one of our advisers on the helpline on 0808 800 0303, or ask a GP, Parkinson’s nurse, or specialist about their suggestions regarding laxatives.

Best wishes,
Joy
