Grants available?

Hi, everyone. The last time I was on the site, I saw somewhere that I could apply for a grant, for things like adjustments or additional devices, like wall rails, etc. I was wondering if these grants are still available? Im after an electric orthopaedic reclining chair, as I now have problems sitting and getting up. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks guys.

Dave.

Hi Dave, welcome back to the Forum, we hope you find it useful. People with Parkinson’s or other forms of Parkinsonism, and their principal unpaid carers, can apply for a Parkinson’s UK Personal Assistance Grant up to £1,500. There will be one more opportunity to apply for the grant in 2025, on 28 July. You can find all the information you need here: Parkinson's UK Personal Assistance Grants | Parkinson's UK

We hope this is usefull.

Sorry guys, I should have introduced myself again as its been a while since Ive been on. Retired this year, although I finished work about 5 years ago. Got diagnosed with YOPD in 2005, 21 years ago this year, if Im not mistaken. Just got out of hospital (2nd time in a year -PD related). First ten years were the discovery years. Next 5 filled in the gaps. This last year or so has been a struggle as I’m now in the advanced stages. The last consultant (I’ve had that many, I think I’ve worn them out) told me he could do no more for me. The thing is most of the time, I feel like an 18 year old … the problem is I cant get one … lol (the old jokes are the best)…

Hi, many thanks for the information. Itll be very useful. Thank you.

Dave.

Hello DaveW
Further to the information given above you can ask for an assessment by the Adult Care Services at your local council and they will provide a ride/recline chair if you are assessed as this being the best way to meet your needs. You need to be aware that just because you have identified the issue with the solution being a rise/recline chair the assessment will look at the wider picture ie is the chair you most commonly use the right height, and depth for you, does it have arms and are there any other points that need to be taken into account - such as does the seat dip down at the back - which is more common than you might think. They will also look at your technique because many of the issues can be solved with simple equipment and advice.
If you have your heart set on a rise/recline chair you are probably aware that these can range from a couple of hundred for a basic chair to several thousand. It depends what you want but you can make it more affordable by opting for a second hand or refurbished one. New chairs are often much more affordable in the sales and companies often offer a range of payment options that make it more affordable. Do a bit of research first though, if only into the basics like the difference between a single motor chair and one with a dual motor.
Finally if your problem is mostly getting up from the chair as opposed to actually needing a recline function, it may be worth looking at the sorts of things shown in the photo. They can be very effective and much cheaper.
Hope this helps, good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi Tot, firstly, I would like to thank you enormously for the information you have collated. I would imagine that this has taken some time to gather. OK, I have to confess that the chair in question, wll also be used by my wife, who I am the main carer for as she is in end stage kidney failure and about 6-7 years ago had a brain aneurism and while in I.C.U. some 3 to 4 weeks later, had a right side stroke paralysing her left side. So, you see, it would be just an electric orthopaedic chair, like the one she has in her hospital room (she is getting her dialysis lines replaced). This is why I would like to get one. Its so comfortable. Its just a plain blue orthopaedic chair and using Google Lens, I found that they range from around £200 to £800. To be honest, I may not even need to apply for the grant. The information you have supplied is invaluable to me. Thank you again.

No problem Dave, I’m glad you’ve got the information you needed - it sounds like you and your wife have a complex situation to live with so I send you both my very best wishes and hope you are able to get the chair you need asap I am sure it will make a difference.
The info won’t be wasted there may well be others who read it and be able to make use of it so any opportunity to pass anything on is never wasted.
