Headaches and tinnitus

Hi all, my headaches and tinnitus are getting far worse as well as sleep disturbance. Sleep I’ve noticed doesn’t reduce the headaches, i tend to wake up with it.
I’m due to see the nurse at the end of the month. I’m currently prescribed with sinemet plus. Is there anything generally they prescribe to alleviate this problem other than painkillers ?

Hi Kevvy2227, thanks for posting. I’m sorry to read that your headaches and tinnitus are getting worse, and that this is impacting your sleep. It sounds painful and frustrating.

Whilst I’m not able to advise on medication, it could be worth calling our helpline to speak to one of our specialist nurses on 0808 800 0303. You can call anytime Monday-Friday between 9am and 6pm, and Saturdays between 10am and 1pm.

I hope you manage to get some kind of resolution sooner rather than later :blue_heart:

Sorry you’re dealing with this, it sounds really rough. :pensive: Good that you’ve got an appointment with the nurse they’ll be the best person to check if your current meds need adjusting or if there’s something else that might help besides painkillers.

Hi @Kevvy2227 that sounds rough, sorry.

The nurse will find it really helpful if you can keep a diary of your headaches from now until your appointment (apologies if you already are) so they can try to find a pattern that might indicate the source.

Make a note of:

When did it start and finish, and did you take anything for it?

When and what did you last eat?

Same for drink

Same for sleep

Same for medication

What were you doing before the headache started?

How were you feeling before the headache started?

Are the headaches and tinnitus always together, or sometimes either/or?

As I say apologies if you’re already doing it, but if not it’s worth starting now and may speed things up a bit for you.

Oh, and they will also probably ask when was your last eye test and dental checkup, so it’s worth having that information to hand for your appointment too

Hi. Like you I have tinnitus. It drives me nuts. It’s worse when I go to bed. The only positive thing about it is that it drowns the wife out when she is telling me about her latest dream. Why do we feel that we have to share our dreams with other people? I have brought a Beechband to help with my tinnitus. It doesn’t stop the whistling in my head but it does help to distract me from listening to it. I have had Parkinson’s for 18 years and everyday is different. My advice would be. Let people help you. Ask for help and support when you need it. Keep on fighting it. Join a support group. I wish that I had joined a support group. I am too independent but you need people around you who get it. Maybe I should take my own advice. Good luck. I hope things improve soon. Geffino.

Hello Geffino,

Thank you for sharing your experience and welcome to the forum. We’re sorry to hear that you’re struggling with tinnitus and it gets worse when you go to bed. This must be frustrating. We’re glad that the BeechBand is a helpful distraction and we hope that people in our community can share their experiences to help.

Thank you for sharing your tips - they are super thoughtful and it can always be hard to follow our own advice.

Letting people help you is so important, please don’t be afraid to reach out for support. You don’t have to navigate living with Parkinson’s alone. We’re here for you. If you’d like to discuss your tinnitus further or if we can help in anyway then our helpline is available. Our trained advisers can provide information and advice and you can ask to speak to one of our Parkinson’s nurses. It’s free and confidential: 0808 800 0303.

We also have a range of local support groups, which you can join. You can find the one closest to you on our website: https://localsupport.parkinsons.org.uk/.

Take care :blue_heart:
