Hospital transport

Hi Everyone, I phoned to book my free hospital transport for an appointment with the nurse this week, but was told I no longer qualified. I was asked questions such as if I was permanently using a wheelchair or needed oxygen. If not, no transport.

I have been looking around for alternatives anyone can suggest – public transport is difficult and taxis cost a lot as it’s over 40 miles.

Any thoughts? Any other alternatives? Given that lift from friend/relative/neighbour is not going to happen?

Please note: I’m not whining, am grateful for help received so far and am aware that there are those who are a lot worse off than me. I mention this because of the negative reactions I’ve had from some people who seem to have misunderstood. I’m just asking the question.

Regards,

Roy.

Hi @Roy_Phillips, it’s definitely understandable to ask about this, especially when the distance is long and transport options are limited. Losing hospital transport can put people in a difficult position.

You’re doing well to explore what else is available.

It might be worth checking whether there are any community transport schemes available in your area, or asking the hospital if they know of any local options.

Does the hospital team know that public transport is unrealistic, as it’s over 40 miles?

You deserve practical ways to get to your appointments, and it’s sensible to ask about it here. If you’d like to speak to someone in our team, please remember you can call our helpline on 0808 800 0303 - we can talk things through at your own pace.

We’re sending you our warmest wishes

Hello my area has a community car scheme that uses volunteer drivers, book. in advance, door. to door charging 50p a mile. Maybe there’s a similar service in your.area..
