Hello everyone,
I’ve been reading quite a bit about intermittent fasting for Parkinson’s.
Has anyone tried this and if so have you noticed improvement in your symptoms?
My husband was diagnosed 9 years ago, but like many others he had been showing signs that something was amiss a couple of years before his official diagnosis in 2016…
He takes Sinemet and Safinamide for his PD symptoms and Rivastigmine for the PD dementia which has been the latest unwelcome symptom to add to the myriad others.
I hope to hear from someone who has tried this type of fasting with some modicum of success…
Thank you. Jean
Hi Jean1, thank you for your post. We’d absolutely you and your husband speaking to his GP or Parkinson’s nurse before making a change like this. They will be able to recommend what’s best to do, and how fasting will impact your husband, for example how he’ll be able to take his medication.
We’re sending you both our love. Please do reach out on 0808 800 3030 if we can help at all.

I use intermittent fasting and fast from about 4pm till 8 am
Allowing the digestive system to rest overnight and autophagy to do its job. Some good videos on YouTube with some studies.
Hi Lar, and thank you for taking time to reply. I’ll take a look at the videos and will also ask our PD nurse about it. Does it seem to have had a noticeable improvement on your PD symptoms? My husband takes Sinemet which has to be taken at least 30 minutes before eating to help with its efficacy, so this will need to be checked out beforehand. Best wishes, Jean
Hi Jean,
The symptoms are no worse and about the same three years . The progress of PD may be on hold I believe if you want better results you need to increase the fasting time and introduce a one day fast.
The up side it saves you money
Hi Lar, many thanks for your reply. I’ll definitely be looking into this. Anything is worth a try to keep the symptoms at bay for as long as possible if safe to do so. Glad you seem to have had some positive results with it. Long may it continue! Best wishes, Jean.
Hi Jean, i do fasting regular. I keep to 16-8 or 14-10 all the time. Ive done 72hr fasts before and this week completed 2 x 36hr fasts. Im on no medications though, so cant say how youre meds would react. I dont feel any reduction in symptoms but going into autophogy for cellular repair, i believe will take time to make a difference. Its the alpha synuclien that builds up in the brain, that hopefully autophogy will hold at bay or even reverse. But big pharma will not invest in trials or research, as they wont make any money if it works. From my beliefs i think in time, it will make a difference to the long term outcome. But youve got to run it with exercise, balanced diet, supplementation and sleep to hit from every angle.
Thanks Dazman18, must admit it all sounds a bit complicated though! I’m going to speak to my husband’s PD nurse about this as he is taking quite a few meds.
Glad to hear that it’s obviously working for you. Anything that helps reduce the many symptoms of PD is a good thing. Best wishes and thanks again for your reply and info. Jean.
