Looking for a Parkinson's specialist in the South West

Hello All,

My Mum was diagnosed with Parkinson’s six years ago. She’s had a very tricky time trying to find a medical specialist to discuss her symptoms with (in fact she’s just found out that she should’ve been seeing one at least once (if not twice) a year since her diagnosis). Her GP and Parkinson’s nurse have been unable to offer any guidance. Her symptoms are changing / complicating slightly so it’d be amazing to find someone, privately or otherwise who could assess her condition.

She’s terribly busy looking after her own mother and finding time for this sort of admin is challenging for her, so it tends not to happen. I live quite far away but I’m hoping somebody here may be able to recommend a specialist within an hour or two’s drive from Yeovil (my Mum can drive and would be happy to travel for help).

Any pointers would be enormously appreciated!

Hello @HEJ any big hospital will have a neurology department . Phone and ask them how to get to see a consultant in that hospital or one closer. you can go to any hospital …

How weas she diagnosed … Without a consultant… !

Hope this helps … You my have to wait to see them .. in big demand …
Can’t understand why the PD team can’t help … Must be as useless as ours !

Hi @HEJ, and welcome to the forum. I’m really glad you’ve found us, although I’m sorry to hear your mum has had such a difficult time accessing the support she needs.

Hopefully some of our members in and around Yeovil can share their experiences of local Parkinson’s specialists and services.

We’d also really encourage you or your mum to give our helpline a call on 0808 800 0303. Our advisers can talk through her situation and offer guidance on accessing specialist care and what options may be available locally.

I hope you get some useful pointers from the community, and a very warm welcome again :blue_heart:

Hi,

Thanks for your reply!

I’m afraid I’m not entirely clear why she hasn’t been able to access a consultant in the Yeovil hospital but the PD team is clearly useless (as I said, she’s only recently found out that she should’ve been seen by a consultant several times by now - they might have told her?), and it sounds like there’s an impossible amount of paperwork/probably a very long waiting time between her and any expert. She was diagnosed by a consultant who specialised in something else so couldn’t keep her on. It’s a good idea to try and call the next-closest hospital, thank you and I will, but in the meantime she’s willing to go privately, so if any names spring to mind I’d be delighted to try and make the link…

Thank you! I hope someone might know of someone too. I’ll try calling the helpline myself and encourage her to do the same!
