Loss of Smell

Can anyone tell me if the loss of smell symptom is a complete loss of smell or altered smell/smelling things that aren’t there? Also is it sudden or does it come on gradually?

Thanks

For me it has been a very selective loss of smell. Mostly I can smell nice things (like roses) and not unpleasant things (like when my grandchildren need a nappy change!). Which is good, I suppose, though not particularly useful when looking after babies.

I can’t really say how it came on but probably gradually and many years before I was diagnosed. Some smells do seem to linger even when they’re not actually there anymore.
