Medication not working

Hi all,
First time posting on here but thought it worth a shot! My Dad is living with PD, diagnosed in 2021. Since starting the Parkinson’s medication his condition has deteriorated significantly. We are now at a point where he is confused, delirious, cannot walk, cannot dress himself or do basic day to day tasks, he is highly anxious an depressed, he cannot eat properly or drink, sleep pattern is all over the place, night terrors and that is just. Few things from a very, very long list.
He is currently at Ashford for his consultant but will hopefully be moving out of area soon and a new consultant will be brought in.

Medication has not worked since diagnosis, he has had repeated blood tests, hospital visits and visits to the memory clinic but they have not found anything in addition to what they already know. Consultant and Parkinson’s team who are assigned to him do not get back to us about the problems we are experiencing - he is now a significant risk of having a bad fall and injuring himself badly (falls at home are increasing)

Any suggestions or help and the GP, consultant are not getting back to us with any help. His latest fall ended up in a hospital visit and he was discharged the next day. They have done a review and changed the meds (increased them) but still no difference (this was little while ago)

Thank you in advance.

Good evening … Sorry you have so much to worry with. When I was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s in June 2023 following a positive Datscan I phoned the Parkinson’s nurses here on 0808 800 0303 & found them very helpful.

You don’t say what age your Dad is. He might be at an age where it is not just Parkinson’s that is affecting him. I have quite a few ailments that effect me & make diagnosis difficult. I am also on loads of pills which may interact with each other.

Maybe go down the private treatment route in the first instance. I did & have found a good neurologist that takes NHS patients.

It is busy. My Parkinson’s nurse has over 700 clients. It should be nearer 300.

Best of luck

Hi

I suspect Steve is right about the possibility of more than one health problem going on. If you are able to go down the private route I would do. His exact health situation needs to be established.

While he may have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, it may be that he actually has one of the aytipical types of Parkinsonism or a combination of problems.

Wishing him well

Doug
