Mom diagnosed - looking for advice and optimism

My mom has just told me she has parkinsons, and was diagnosed earlier this year. I have had suspicions for the last year or so. I live abroad so only see her a few times a year, but I noticed some hand and mouth tremors.

She admitted she also has some stiffness on one side, and her arm doesn’t automatically swing when she walks. Her sleeping hasn’t been great either. Since starting medication she said she feels much, much better. She has also joined an exercise group.

She is a very active, healthy woman, in fact we have always joked that she would outlive us all! So it’s hard to wrap my head around the diagnoses.

I’ve been reading up online and have come across some scary stories about mental decline, dementia, etc. I know everyones journey is different but I’m scared for what the future holds.

I can’t move straight away, but I’m putting plans in place to move back home next year to be closer to her.

Any advice or words of wisdom are welcome

I think it’s wonderful that you are planning to move so you can be closer to your Mum:hugs:.

I am 66, diagnosed with PD Feb2025 and my daughters are in their 30’s and it’s very reassuring for me to know they can be here to help me if I needed them in a hurry.

Everyone’s journey is different but we are all facing challenges and need support because we all know that PD brings with it some difficulties which are hard to cope with on our own.

You deserve a lot of credit for making the decision to be closer to your Mum, well done!

I helped my Mum as her primary carer when she had cancer and I am so grateful for being able to spend so much precious time with her :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:.

Again good luck, I’m sure your Mum will be eternally grateful and proud of you
