Mouth Klear spray

Hi everyone,

Haven’t written for some time. My husband got diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia, so battling with the challenges that is bringing plus his Parkinson’s!

A question: has anyone tried mouth Klear spray to help with drooling/excessive saliva?

That is one thing that really upsets him!!

Thanks for being there!

Frances

Hi @Frances54, thank you for sharing this with our forum. That sounds like a difficult combination of challenges for you both, and drooling can be distressing to live with.

We have some information pages about eating, swallowing, and managing saliva, as well as about managing drooling, which may be helpful.

It might also be worth speaking with your husband’s Parkinson’s nurse, GP or a speech and language therapist in case they’re able to suggest solutions.

We’re glad you reached out and hope others here will share what’s worked for them, especially if they have experience of using the spray you mentioned.

Sending our warmest wishes

Thank you for responding. Yes, I have read through many different articles and all the info on the Parkinson’s website, but hadn’t come across this spray. It is actually called Kleaner oral and body hygiene spray.

I just wondered if anyone has used this and if it is helpful. I will consult with the doctor to see if it is compatible with the meds, but it doesn’t seem to have any ingredients that might indicate that.

Hi Frances, hubby has PD and the excess saliva is a problem for him as well, you don’t say whether your nurse/ gp has prescribed any of the normal meds for this?

There is a chain that they follow. First is atropine drops, this did work for hubby , but unfortunately he has dental implants and putting the drops under his tongue caused soreness. He now has the lowest dosage of glycopyrronium [Sialanar]. It’s an oral solution but administered via a syringe he only has .5mg and it does help, the main thing is that it doesn’t cause the soreness in his mouth.

He also sucks sweets this helps with the swallow reflex.

I hope you get something that helps. Good luck.

Thank you Janben for your suggestions. Unfortunately, my husband has had a big decline since, went into hospital with chest infection and was given Atropine drops and antibiotics to come home with. He declined further at home and is now literally in his last days. Atropine really helped the first few days to stop the thick saliva from choking him, as he couldn’t cough it up!! But obviously now, no more need. Hope your hubby can find a good balance and relief from all the horrible Parkinson’s symptoms. And all the best to you as his carer! It is such a challenge, and there are days one feels one can’t cope any longer, but somehow, from somewhere the strength comes back!
