Hi. I have just been diagnosed as having Benign Tremulous Parkinsons. My consultant has written to my GP to ask them to prescribe Sinemet 25/100 mg I have just been told that this is not something that is offered by the PCT nor will be the care and monitoring I need for the prescription. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so how did they get round it. Will I have to pay for prescriptions and blood tests if I have the drug prescribed? I’m totally at a loss what to do.
Hi @Queenstownisbest, thank you for your post, and welcome to our peer-to-peer support forum.
Sinemet is a standard Parkinson’s medication and the NHS has a page about this here: About co-careldopa - NHS
Regarding what you were told, it may help to go back to your consultant or Parkinson’s nurse and explain what the GP has said. They may be able to clarify responsibilities directly with the GP or provide further guidance to support shared care.
It may be that other users of this forum have been in a similar situation, and may be able to share their experiences.

thank you I have contacted the consultatant that diagnosed me which was privately funded because the earliest referral on the NHS was for July 2026. I am waiting to see what he has to say. I never expected to find that medication wouldn’t be funded by the NHS but will wait until I hear back from the neurologist I saw. thank you.
That sounds incredibly stressful you are not alone others have had similar push back initially. Ask your consultant to liaise directly with the GP PCT and consider contacting PALS they are often very helpful in resolving this.
Thank you for your response. My GP has contacted my neurologist and apparently he is back in his office on Monday so hopefully I will hear more then. If I don’t have any luck I will certainly be in touch.
Happy New Year!
Brenda
Thank you for your reply. I will look into what you are suggesting.
Happy New Year.
