My wife has developed an obsession with her hair

Hi, My wife has now developed an obsession with her hair. She is constantly twirling it with her hands as though she is going to put it in a pony tail but she is doing it to the top or side of her hair and not the rear. When I ask “why you doing that " she’ll say " Because I want too” or " I’ll show you later" and then she continues over and over and over, sometimes it can be for hours on end. She is also getting confused and has recently started saying she’s going to paint the living room or she’s going to get new glass for the front door etc. Has anyone else come across this sort of thing ? Thanks.

Hello,
I think what you describe is referred to as punding and it would be common in Parkinsons Disease. As regards the home improvements, it could also be related to PD. It might be a side effect of dopamine replacement medication whereby the sense of realism is altered or seeking the feeling of happiness which naturally might happen when a room is painted, if you get me? Not to frighten you but it could be the very early stage of dementia too so might be advisable to tell neurologist at next appointment, who may prescribe a patch to slow that down.

Thanks for the reply, She has just started seeing the memory clinic and has been put on some medication for her onset dementia diagnosis, so yes, it’s all going to be linked together. We are due to see the specialist in mid January and I’ve been keeping a day to day diary to show him. Thank you
