New bed and backache

I bought a new bed and mattress but unfortunately I’ve had back ache ever since.

I wake up at around 4/5 my legs and arms and back aching and I have to get up.

I’ve been advised to get a topper for my new mattress as I’ve obviously bought the wrong mattress.

Anyone got any suggestions pls?

I spent £1,000 on my new bed and mattress and don’t want to make any ore expensive mistakes.

Hi @Margs1. I’m really sorry to hear you’re struggling with this, especially after spending so much on a new bed. That sounds very uncomfortable and frustrating.

A mattress topper can be an excellent and much more affordable way to adjust how your bed feels without buying a whole new mattress.

We have a page here with information on beds, mattresses and bedroom adaptations that you might find useful.

Another option is to ask an occupational therapist or physiotherapist to assess your posture and sleep setup. They can offer very personalised advice.

Hopefully a good topper will make a big difference without costing a fortune, and you’ll finally get some pain-free sleep!

Thank you for your advise ill certainly look into these suggestions.

I find that my sleep issues are significantly affected by my ability or lack of being able to move around in bed at night. Turning over or changing positions is extremely difficult. We have bought a silk sheet for the bottom and that makes quite a difference. Also, I find a firm mattress substantially easier. Finally in terms of what you wear in bed I have discovered that silk or silky boxer shorts help with the movement on the silk sheet.
