I recently moved to the UK from the U.S. with my husband, who’s living with a disability. It’s been a big transition for both of us new systems, new rules, and a lot to figure out. One thing I’ve been struggling to understand is how VAT works here, especially when it comes to disability-related products and services.
Back home, certain medical items and support services were covered or tax-free depending on the state, but here in the UK, I’ve read that some things might be VAT-exempt or reduced if they’re for disabled people. It sounds helpful, but honestly, I’m not sure how to access it or even know what qualifies.
I’ve come across an online VAT calculator (CalcVAT), which has helped a little with understanding the basics but I don’t know if it reflects exemptions for people like my husband. I’ve also heard that charities might be able to offer services without VAT, but again, it’s all very new to me.
If anyone has gone through something similar or could share how VAT exemptions actually work in day-to-day life with a disability, I’d be really grateful. Every little bit of guidance helps.
Thank you so much. This community already feels like such a comfort in a very unfamiliar place.
Hi there, i am by no means an expert. Imhave though okeat buying a rollator. The osraff saus tat asi have Parkinson’s then VAT wouldn’t be applied. All she did was register me on their system stating that i have Parkinson’s. Whether a form needs to be completed each time you use a new supplier, i dont know, but i expect that will be the case. You will l see that specialist shops /online will how show prices with and without VAT. I have no idea what things are avaliable VAT- free, but the specialist outlets will know. For info i bought a bendable fork which was £8: but only paid £6.60 ish
If you have Parkinson’s, many mobility and daily living aids can be bought VAT-free. The supplier just needs to record your condition, often via a simple form, and specialist shops usually show both VAT-inclusive and VAT-free prices. For example, your bendable fork cost about £6.60 instead of £8 once the VAT was removed. I came across Vatcalc.Onl when I had doubts about VAT amounts it’s handy for quick checks.
