Newly Diagnosed

Hi all recently diagnosed, Im 40 years of age. My DAT Scan came back positive a couple of weeks ago unfortunately I cant speak to my consultant for another few weeks. I have a tremor on my right side and I’m very fatigued.

I have been advised to apply for PIPS but is this too early before speaking to my consultant?

Also I have serious illness cover against my mortgage, has anyone any advice on how easy the process of claiming for Parkinsons on this type of policy?

Thanks

Hello JOJO12 and welcome to the forum,
I can’t help with your insurance question I’m afraid. I did once upon a time have this type of cover myself, but cancelled it once my mortgage was paid up, Also policies vary so much I’m not sure I could say anything useful except to re-read your policy, speak with the company or maybe Citizen’s Advice or even the helpline can perhaps help you further.
Re claiming PIP, this I think will tell you what you want to know.

You can apply for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) when you’ve been officially diagnosed with a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability, and you’ve had difficulty with everyday tasks or getting around for at least three months. You should also expect these difficulties to continue for at least nine months after claiming.

Good luck and please do come back to the forum if you have any other questions.

Hello JoJo, welcome to the forum.
Parkknsons UK have a wonderful helpline staffed by friendly knowledgeable people able to answer many questions. There is also specific support available for claiming benefits.
However having a diagnosis of Parkinson’s doesn’t automatically mean you won’t be able to work snd continue paying your mortgage. Obviously only you and your medical team will know how Parkinson’s is impacting you, plus what type of work you do may impact. My husband was diagnosed later in life but continued to work (office based design engineer) until he was 74.
I do think it is important to claim
Benefits you are entitled to in particular PIP as this benefit gives you access to the mobility scheme enabling you to use some of the benefit money to lease a car specific to your needs. Those over state pension age cannot claim and therefore cannot benefit from mobility.
I hope the meeting with your specialist is fruitful. Best Wishes. Jane
