Parkinson’s and anglesey

Hi
It’s a few years since my other half was diagnosed with PD & to be honest, once we got over the initial shock, he’s managed well and whilst shaky, is still very active.

We had always planned to retire to Anglesey from Cheshire but following the diagnosis, we thought it wouldn’t be possible. Fast forward a few years and although early retirement because of PD is increasingly on the cards, the idea of moving to Anglesey refuses to go away.

Does anyone on here have any real experience of living with the condition on the island; the plusses and minuses. At the moment we get a good service from the NHS, consultant and PD nurse appointments every 6 months.

Any advice gratefully received.

Hi,
we moved to Anglesey (also from Cheshire), almost 20 years ago and my husband was diagnosed almost 13 years ago. At first we used to have to travel to Llandudno for appointments with his consultant which I found difficult to manage whilst working full time. The service we receive now from the NHS has improved greatly, but I think in part due to my early retirement and ability to take control. His appointments are mostly held in Holyhead, a 10 minute drive, but if other specialists need to be consulted, we have to travel into Bangor.
We’re reasonably happy with life here, we don’t have a large circle of friends, but life is more relaxed than in the suburbs. On the other hand, I often wish we hadn’t moved as I feel pretty much alone to care and if we hadn’t moved i’d have at least had the support of our families who were much closer. This last couple of years as his full time carer i’ve lost touch with the friends I made through work. I try to got to the gym at the leisure centre (where I’ve made new friends) at least twice a week early in the morning, but sometimes I feel so exhausted I feel sleep is more important.
I’m sorry if this isn’t much help and hope you make the decision that’s right for you.
