Parkinson’s & work

Hi.
Some advice if anyone here can help. I was diagnosed 3+ years ago and continued to work. My symptoms have now got to the stage where I cannot do my current job. My employer informs me that as Parkinson’s isn’t classed as a terminal illness I’m not eligible for a medical retirement/pension. I’m 55 and wondered if anyone else had any
experience of this? Many thanks.

Hi Stu2,

Welcome to our forum community. You’re likely to hear from our members soon about retirement/pension with Parkinson’s, but we would also encourage you to reach out to our helpline on 0808 800 0303. It’s free and confidential and assisting with regulations like these are one of the primary services they offer.

With our warmest welcome,

I really doubt that is true but you’d have to look at your specific pension. As you know you do not have to be terminally ill to be unable to work due to illness. I would get an independent financial advisor to look at it for you. There are plenty who will do a free initial consutlation and give advice.

Hi, If you have a work pension, then look at the pension information to see if there is anything about ill health retirement. I got an ill health pension from my employer. Your individual circumstances maybe different, but I’d be happy to share my experience of this with you.
