Rhinitis

I am suffering terribly from rhinitis and excess mucus - I have to sleep sitting up.
By the morning my upper respiratory tract rattles like an old drain!(I have other health problems to cope with e.g one lung removed when I was 15). I think it's to do with one of medication - which currently is as follows:

200 mgs Salevo and Reuip 12 mgs at 6.30 a.m.
150 mgs stalevo at 10.00 a.m.
150 mgs stalevo at 1.00 to 1.30 p.m.
125 mgs madopar at 4.00 p.m
150 mgs stalevo at 6.00 p.m.
8mgs Requip at 6.30 p.m.
125 mgs sinamet at 7.45 p.m.

I feel the culprit is stalevo - but apart from bouts of Dyskenesia this regime suits me very well. I've had Parkinson's for 10 years. Anyone else experiencing this problem?
hi
this might be of interest

i mention it because i had rhinitis before i was given meds and i have a prescribed aqueous nasal spray which helps a lot.
i personally think there is a lot to be said for the inflamation theory of pd as i had shingles about the same time as the first symptoms.
Hi Cadno and Turnip,

Thank you for your posts and inspiring a "light bulb" moment. Last week I wrote a note to my GP explaining that the nasal spray I'd been using for the last 10 years for allergies had not been working at all for 2 months. It hadn't crossed my mind that this change was Parkinson's-related. I hope my GP has something up his sleeve to help me out as my allergies are not seasonal.

Best wishes.
I too have had the problem with excessive mucus and I have seen ear nose and throat Specialists. They have said I had rhinitis and tried treating it to no avail. I am convinced that it is a Parkinson problem. My Parkinson nurse said that it possibly caused by the fact that the swallowing muscles do not always work automatically and that I should try to remember to swallow more often to help clear any excess mucus in the throat. This combined with an excercise I was given by an OT dealing with speach and swallowing problems has made things better. the Excercises are as follow;-

EFFORTFUL SWALLOWING ROUTINE

1. SWALLOWING NORMALLY WITH YOUR CHIN TIPPED ONTO YOUR CHEST
2. SWALLOW AND AT THE SAME TIME SQUEEZE YOUR TONGUE AND THROAT THROUGHOUT THE SWALLOW
3. FEEL THE EFFORT IN YOUR NECK AS YOU DO THIS
4. TRY DOING THIS EXCERCISE 5 TIMES IN A ROW - YOU MAY NEED A SIP OF WATER BEFORE EACH ATTEMPT TO MAKE THIS EASIER. REPEAT THIS EXCERCISE 3 TIMES A DAY.

VOICE AND NASAL RESONANCE EXCERCISES

1. TRY HUMMING ALLOWING THE SOUND TO RESONATE AROUND THE THROAT, NOSE AND MOUTH
2 HUM A MUSICAL SCALE UP AND DOWN SIX NOTES

It looks a lot but it only takes a few minutes

Good Luck it worked for me

I read in public in a Roman Catholic Church and the mucus was causing problems and it was also suggested that I used it before I read or when I sung.
Only just come across this thread as I am scroliing through . My husband had shingles although in his forties he is now 77 but on reflection we can see he has always had the Parkinsons problem .

His speach can be slow and slurred , I have persuaded him to do throat and mouth exercises and he now has quite a repetoire. LOL .It has been quite helpful .

As time passed I found that mucus collects in his throuat and particularly lying down he can sound like bagpipes and his chest is quite squeeky .

I believe it is caused because his mouth drops open for much of the dayand he doesnt swallow enough in the same way as staring and not blinking .

Because I had started having a problem with mucus collectio the Dr advised me to get a small spray and make up a solution of salt, sugar , and Bi carb mixed in water and use it as a nasal spray . I tried it and hence no more problem for me ..

So I am going to try it for my husband , because he gets dry and sticky eyes i do the same thing only mix baby oil and baby baby soap and use it to bathe his eyes if the nasal spray works as good as the eye bathe we will be very pleased will let you know how we get on .
