Staying in work

Hi, I have just started some new meds which make me feel quite sick, due to this I asked my boss if I could come off the phones ( work in a contact centre) and deal with incoming emails, they said fine as long as the phone’s are not too busy, if the phones are busy and I could not take the calls then I would be classed as unfit for work, due to this I had to go on the sick, even though there was other work I could have done, is there anything I can do about this as I don’t want to have to go on the sick if there is other work I could do whilst I am getting used to meds.

Hi @Paddy1,

I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve had to take time off work due to your mediation. My advice to you would be speak to your line manager about this and ask for a meeting so you can speak to him about your concerns. If this doesn’t work then I would escalate this to your HR manager for them to look into, what appears to be, unfair treatment.

We have more information on this our website here - https://www.parkinsons.org.uk/information-and-support/work-and-parkinsons. We also have a team of specialist employment advisers on helpline to answer anymore queries you may have.

Can only agree, this is exactly what I did 18 months ago with my employer. Take a work friend with you and definitely have HR at the meeting. Good luck Paddy and I hope it works out well

Thank you for replying, really appreciate it. I am going to arrange a meeting, however I am now being sent to occupational health, everything seems to be a battle.

Hi Paddy, that’s positive I had a OH referral after my first meeting and then following that we agreed on the reasonable adjustments which were necessary to keep me in work. I’ve had further OH reviews once travelling long distance daily became an issue about 6 months ago and agreed on a necessary change of work to restrict travelling. I am happy with the change /adjustment and the new role is equally challenging and interesting.
Fingers crossed you get a similar outcome :crossed_fingers::sunglasses:

Hi there, thank you for replying, I feel better about that now, I looked at it as a negative. I will go with the flow and see what happens, will let you know how I get on. I am glad to hear that the outcome for you was a positive one.

Good luck, I have been fortunate as my bosses are looking out for me, but recognise the attitudes.
