It’s really understandable to feel unsure in this situation – it sounds like you’re being a great advocate for your dad.
A good next step is to ask your GP for a referral to a specialist neurologist, ideally one with experience in Parkinson’s.
We have a really useful page on getting a diagnosis and finding support, which might help you know what to ask and expect.
You’re doing the right thing by seeking a second opinion – sometimes symptoms can be subtle or progress slowly, so having a specialist’s input can make a big difference.
Please know that you can also call our free, confidential helpline for support and advice: 0808 800 0303. Our trained experts and specialist nurses are on hand anytime between 9am and 6pm Monday to Friday, and 10am and 1pm on Saturdays.
I clearly have Parkinson’s but no formal notice. I can’t see any advantage to getting a formal diagnosis. I will have to deal with the DVLA. I don’t need meds yet.
I saw the NHS neurology consultant about 16 months ago. She said she would see me again in six months. No word yet.
But what benefit will accrue? I might as well enjoy the summer whilst keeping off the roads !
Hi Foxes, thank you for your comment. We’re sorry you’ve not been able to see the consultant again.
We have information on our website about what to do if you’re diagnosed with Parkinson’s and what your next steps are. It’s important you know you are not alone and there is support out there: Do I have Parkinson's? | Parkinson's UK
