One of my friends is looking for a therapist and I just wondered if anyone in this forum might be able to help.
He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s about 5 years ago but he’s been in denial for most of the time. Reality now seems to be hitting - triggered by having to take several months off work - and he needs support in re-framing the future more positively. He is at a crunch point with his career but sees down-scaling as failure.
The hospital Occupational Therapist has suggested talking therapy as the next step. . He’s ideally looking for someone with experience of Parkinson’s (either themselves or through people they’ve worked with) but has drawn a blank so far. He’s based in Essex but this could be done virtually.
Parkinson’s affects everyone differently and sometimes a diagnosis can be difficult to accept.
Mindfulness meditation can improve your physical and mental wellbeing. It’s as useful to the people in your life as it is for your Parkinson’s symptoms. It may be especially helpful while we’re living through the uncertainty caused by circumstances beyond our control. We have a mindfulness toolkit to help people with their physical and mental symptoms which can be via the Parkinson’s UK website here.
There are also a number of different therapies that can help people with Parkinson’s and we have a list of them along with useful contacts which can be found here.
Lastly, we have a wonderful team of advisers via our free and confidential helpline who would love to offer you and your friend more support. Please feel free to give us a call on 0808 800 0303.
