Hello I posted here in 2021 when I had concerns about a tremor my dad has.
He was seen by his gp at the time but never received a referral and my dad never chased this up.
My dad is 77 years old, very fit and active. He has a tremor - resting and active, resting is definitely there but not very obvious. It doesn’t seem to worry or bother my dad but it is worrying me.
I am worrying this could get worse as I have noticed a slight tremor in his chin.
His hands tremor in both hands he was diagnosed with an essential tremor years ago (15 years) but as he has a resting tremor as well i am concerned for him. His brother and sister don’t live in the UK and they both have hand tremors as well. ( he has more siblings that don’t have tremors)
Would medication slow down the progression? Many thanks
Good evening James25 … I am 70 years old & was diagnosed with Atypical Parkinson’s in June 2023, but I’ve probably had it for 5 years or so.
My neurologist originally told me that the Parkinson’s I have does not respond well to medication & suggested I not bother. He then left the NHS & my Parkinson’s Nurse put me on Co-careldopa [Sinemet] saying it might slow the progress of Parkinson’s.
Like your Dad I have a slight resting tremor that does not bother me, also gait freezing. Since starting the medication I have slept badly & have had worrying nightmares. My Parkinson’s nurse says this is probably down to the Parkinson’s medication I take.
So taking Parkinson’s medication or not is in my opinion, as someone who has Parkinson’s, a 50/50 call.
If your Dad’s Parkinson’s symptom’s don’t bother your Dad then I’d not pressure him. Just my own opinion. Some here I’m sure will advise taking the medication & I can’t argue with that. But the side effects my taking medication have not been pleasant for me.
There is a lot of guesswork with Parkinson’s medication, I’m on the fence as to whether it makes a difference or not & are the benefits worth the probable side effects of taking the medication?
No he hasn’t but I am guessing he has Parkinson’s. It cannot be an essential tremor anymore as he has a resting tremor. He never mentions it. My dad would not complain.
Slight tremors totally unchanged. My shaking does get worse in stressful situations. It is my gait freezing that has got worse & does bother me.
I cannot carry a cup of coffee or plate of food in a cafe. Raising my fork to my mouth also is difficult, but as I say doesn’t bother me. But I only ever eat on my own because of this.
