Urgent help request

Please can anyone help? I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 18 months ago and my symptoms are confined to my right arm, constant tremors and the most awful pain and cramping in my forearm. The only PD meds I’m on are Pramipexole SR once a day which I feel no benefit from at all. I’ve tried OTC analgesics but these don’t help at all. My GP gave me Tramadol which just makes me sick. Hot water bottles help, but am starting to feel very down as this pain is just awful.
Has anyone else experienced this? Or has anyone any suggestions as to effective analgesia or other means of control as feel I’m at my wits end. Thank you Katie x

Sorry Katie I am lucky that I experience little pain. My Parkinsons specialist nurse is fantastic and at the end of the phone - worth a try. I hope things improve for you.

Hi @Welshlady,

I’m really sorry to hear that you’ve been experiencing pain, it’s no wonder you’ve been feeling down. You may need to go back to your GP or speak to your Parkinson’s nurse about your medication - they may need to review again if they have been ineffective.

If you call our helpline service, one of our advisers can arrange for a Parkinson’s nurse to call you back within 24 hours. Please give us a call on 0808 800 0303 as soon as you can.

Best wishes,
Reah

Thanks Gus, I will be seeing my Consultant again fairly soon so I will talk to him about a change of meds. Sadly I don’t have a PD nurse in my area which is a shame as it seems a fabulous resource. Thank you for your input. Katie

Hi @Welshlady,

It’s shame that you don’t access to a Parkinson’s nurse in your area. As I mentioned in my last post, do give us a call via our helpline so we arrange for a Parkinson’s nurse to get in touch with you.

Hi,

A few of us on here take Amitriptyline for pain. It’s especially good for nerve pain. My neurologist prescribed it for my shoulder pain. It also helps you sleep.

Hi there, I too take amytryptiline and it really helps. I make sure I don’t take the single dose after 8pm otherwise I have really vivid dreams.

I have no experience of pramipexole and like Gus find sinemet works well for me.
Have you thought about alternative therapies like acupuncture. I feel it helps with my stiffness. I do not have the pain you describe but know an ex-GP who is bent over with back pain. He was very sceptical but now feels acupuncture is beneficial. May be worth a try. Good Luck.

Hi Welshlady.
I had similar pain and cramps as you for about a year and eventually settled down and went away. I tried a number of medications, but nothing really helped. Unfortunately, I have a number of new symptoms. Parkinson’s is a disease that keeps on giving.
Best regards
Iain
