Walking Football

Hello all. I was diagnosed with Parkinsons 10 years ago and have so far had what I can describe as mild worsening of symptoms although I have recently have had uncontrollable shaking all over my body. I decided to look into the possibility of playing walking football. I contacted local club who welcomed me to come along to their facility. I enjoyed the session very much and found that this recreation and mixing with other members allowed me to forget my Parkinsons concentrating on playing. This was 5-6 months ago and I have been attending every week since and have really enjoyed the experience and are going to play for them in a League matches which are due to start shortly. They are all aware of my Parkinsons and have shown an understanding of the condition and have treated me like any one else. Walking football has been a revelation to me and I would recommend that you give it a go.

@Biscuits hubby has been playing walking football for a number of years he had played normal football at a decent level and ‘retired’ when he was 52.

Getting back to WF, a lot of the participants knew him from his earlier days, he loves it as he said when on the pitch you forget about PD the ‘lads’ know he has PD and are brilliant, he plays 3 times a week for 2 different clubs.

He did play in a couple of tournaments, but he doesn’t now as he finds it too stressful , he enjoys playing and the friendship of the lads he plays with.

As I say to hubby each time he leaves to play:

Enjoy yourself, it’s fun, don’t get stressed. Try not to get injured

Hello, yes it will be interesting to see if I encounter stress with the tournaments. I’m approaching 66 but there are players in their 70’s and 80’s )although not with Parkinsons). Glad to hear that your husband has identified this and is playing for fun and enjoyment as well as getting exercise.

Hi, @Biscuits. I replied on your other post too, but just wanted to say a proper welcome to the community - it’s great to have you here!

Thanks for starting this separate thread as well. It’s such a positive way to open up the conversation and hopefully inspire others to give walking football a try :blue_heart:

@Biscuits Hubby is 72 and none of the other players have PD. He plays in the over 50’s as the over 65’s is too slow for him:) carry on enjoying yourself.
