Is there any info about overweight people with Parkinson’s and how the weight loss drugs such as Wegovy would effect symptoms and treatment
The booming class of GLP-1 drugs that includes Ozempic and Wegovy is not only effective for diabetes and obesity, but is also showing early potential to help with conditions involving the brain, like mental health disorders, Alzheimer’s, and even, as new study results suggest — Parkinson’s disease.
In a Phase 2 trial, patients with early Parkinson’s disease taking an older GLP-1 diabetes drug called lixisenatide experienced no worsening of motor symptoms over a year, in contrast to patients on placebo who did, according to the study, published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Best wishes & with thanks to Google A1 diagnosis.

Hello Sallyd,
We have some information on maintaining a healthy weight with Parkinson’s, you can find this here: Maintaining a healthy weight | Parkinson's UK.

have heard these weight loss drugs are dangerous do more research before proceeding.
Intermittent fasting and exercising would be my preferred option.
Hi sallyd,
I just seen a post about ozempic on X and the side effects are not good proceed with caution.
The GI side effects would be particularly dangerous for Parkinson’s patients.
Parkinson’s already causes gastroparesis and constipation in most patients. Adding a drug that can cause stomach paralysis, severe constipation, and intestinal obstruction seems incredibly risky. These aren’t minor side effects, they’re documented serious complications that can become permanent.
My mother has Parkinson’s and was considering Wegovy for weight management. Her neurologist strongly advised against it after reviewing the GI complication data.
I did research and found Defective Drug Site which documents thousands of cases where these drugs caused permanent gastroparesis, bowel obstruction, and severe motility disorders. For someone already dealing with Parkinson’s-related GI issues, adding this drug could be devastating.
I’d strongly recommend discussing alternatives with both a neurologist and gastroenterologist before considering these medications.
