To access messages go to my account > my messages > new message > and then enter the username(s) in the 'to' field. I hope this works, but do let us know if not!
I have checked with the team, and we don't think there's ever been an option to message a user by clicking on their avatar, but I have passed this on as a suggestion for the future. I have also passed on your suggestion for users to be able to post images between themselves.
