Beechband - Good or adverse effects?

possibly, but I can barely fasten it myself around my wrist. How I would manage, further up my arm. I don’t know. they’re not exactly the easiest thing to fasten with that buckle, are they?

Hi Art, no they’re not easy to fasten I usually have to help hubby with his. He has a velco loop strap for his watch. If it was hubby I would try and gerry rig some other sort of band. I don’t know if you or if you have a partner that could try this?

Hi @janben glad you managed to order one .. it’s a bit of a faff trying to first register at ail ex but the cost a lower .

Not to sure if it’s completely waterproof .. I would not go swimming with it on ! I believe it’s more splash proof as they say , as it has 2 buttons on the side , But it’s still better then a hole around the on/off button !! And having the components exposed.

I hope it helps in some way ..yes you may be able to just change the beat slightly. Experiment with it , it’s easy adjustment.

Never know what PD was until 2007 …. After 18 years .. boy .. it gets worse.. with the add on of hallucinations due to progress and medication and the thought of dementia in the background .

Every day… it seems to bring a new challenge for me … my wife who has PD. Can’t see what it’s doing to me and the very tough days I have trying too explain too her .. it’s a hallucination.. i get very down and have had some very dark thoughts . I have forgotten what fun is ! Or how to enjoy myself.

Even her family try to explain .. there not real .. but nope .. will not listen .

24 h 7 days a week 365 it seams like no one knows how the partner feels, we just have to get on with it sacrificeing every thing we want to do too help our loved ones .. boy our much our lives have changed … due to this condition and I feal for any one looking after a partner, friend with PD , it’s full time … just when you thought you made progress … something else comes along.. as you quote .. it the condition that keeps on giving.

Hi Birch, as you can see from my posts hubby has been trying the BB it’s just over 6 weeks now, he still tremors, but not quite as much. On talking to @Polomint I thought I’d get a metronome watch. We tried it and set it to 80, it was too fierce and seemed to be too fast so we adjusted the beat downwards. We ended at 30, it still seemed too fast and sharp.

He has gone back to the BB. He has 2 and swaps them as soon as 1 runs out. As I said the tremor has subsided but not gone. There’s no way he could drop his meds.

When sitting and watching tv it can re start. I had an idea to maybe hold something in each hand, we had a couple of silicon squeezy eggs we used to improve grip.

He holds one in each hand, and moves his arms to different positions, this has helped tremendously.

Hi Janben

I tried my metronome at a variety of speeds and for me at a lower speed it helped me to pace myself walking up hills as I concentrated more on the pulse and pushed negative thoughts out of my head (perhaps I can only think of one thing at a time!).

I have tried your suggestion of the silicone squeezy eggs while watching tv and that does work for me even if only held in my shaking hand so thank you and thinking about it maybe I CAN think of two things at once i.e watching tv AND squeezing a ball!

Once again thank you for suggesting the squeezy silicone ball it does cut down my shaking and “every little helps “(I have heard that saying somewere or the other!)

@birch Glad that the suggestion worked, funnily enough when I suggested it for hubby, he tried squeezing the eggs, but found just holding them worked better for him, [ maybe it’s just the weight]he does also have to adjust where he places his arms a bit of a hokey cokey arm wise

Yes as you say every little does help. As I mentioned to polomint Billy Connelly was right about PD ‘It’s the gift that keeps taking’. So if little bits help it’s a small victory.

Hi Janben

I think I was a very negative person pre parkinsons and if there is a plus point since being diagnosed it’s that I now try to see any positive in anything in the day.

Recently I was in a department store queue and when it was my turn to be served I couldn’t get my credit card out my wallet straight away so I apologised to the lady and said sorry I have parkinsons and sometimes it slows me down a bit.She looked straight at me and said “I would never had known that if you hadn’t of told me” and that was such a positive response for me and kept me smiling for the rest of the day!

So although it’s a pain (quite literally)to have parkinsons I feel trying to being more positive in whatever I do either mentally of physically is my way of dealing with it.

@birch Hi Birch, funny you should say about being negative pre PD hubby since being diagnosed is far more empathetic, it’s as if his PD has made him notice that people struggle, I think this is PD’s only plus point.

If we can find a small victory each day it makes life a bit easier.

Thought I’d do another ‘update’ on the BB. As I’ve said before hubby isn’t seeing the gains he hoped he would get, but I do think it is helping.

I ordered the new band the 100D as it was supposed to be quieter and had the light to check it was charged, also a better wristband.

Well 2 out of 3 not bad. It is alot quieter, great for me, hubby zoned it out but the quack was quite loud. The light is good as you don’t leave it overcharging. Now the wristband…It’s dreadful, in fact the other band was easier for hubby to get on than this new 1.

I wrote on the contact form to BB saying why didn’t they use the velcro type band, they said they would take the feedback on board.

I really don’t think the tested out this new wrist band properly as they would have seen the pitfalls.

Hubby has a fitness tracker which he uses for his fitness but also as an alarm to remind him to take his meds. I got him a replacement velcro band for this, so I looked on ebay and found one that would fit the BB. It cost £5.49 with free postage and it works a treat.

Hello @Janben . I will not buy another one due too it’s appears to be a “ throw away item” at its end of life which could be 6 to 12 months, why as it says in the instructions “ battery can not be replaced “ …. but it can ! …. It says on emails that they will not supply a cable as it probably will end up in the bin and they don’t want to add the amount going to landfill, BUT If you make an item that can not be fixed , as in replacement batteries..surely it will end up in the bin!! . Yes you can send back to BB office at your cost ! .

Changing light indicates it’s charging.. it doesn’t mean it can’t be over charged, as ours did and the battery expanded.

Looking at the picture it still has a gap around the switch, which can let water in and this plastic switch cover can brake off at the bottom over time. As the case looks like it’s 3D printed.

We tried it .. impressive at first.. but how many are you going to have to buy over the coming years.

As I know everyone with PD is different, these no one size fits all , that’s shown in the strap as you say it needs more testing and more thinking about how to make it last longer the the battery life.

@Polomint Thanks for the information, yes I did understand why they didn’t include a cable as most people who have a mobile phone have one of these leads. But as you say when the battery dies all these watches will go into landfill which is not good. Also it’s not good selling practise these days as people expect some green credentials?

I know I keep saying it but it isn’t as good as we hoped, but I do think the reason why is hubbys anxiety, that has a big effect on him and the BB. I know another one of the pluses with BB is calming but again it is on and off with hubby.

I will send away for a couple of LQ S1 batteries for when they do expire at least they won’t go into landfill?

I agree, Janben, 2 out of 3 isn’t bad. But the new strap certainly is terrible, I have to help my husband with it most days.

I’ll look into that Velcro strap, is it easy to swap?

@Sunflower1 Yes it’s very easy to change, it has the same removal and replacement as the rubber strap. BB do do an alternative elasticated with what looks like a buckle pull to tighten, but they are £8.50 plus p&p, I’m not sure how well they would work tbh?

If you search on ebay for:

20mm 22mm Sports Nylon Loop Watch Band Strap Replacement Bracelet Quick Release

I bought mine from vipbestuk, they were £5.49 each, but it looks like they have been reduced to £5.22.

Beechband do now have the other type

Thanks very much. I’ll order one.

Do you think they got anybody with Parkinson’s disease to try either of their straps?! Other than Carl himself, who may or may not have limited dexterity.

@Sunflower1 Hubby and I also thought that they hadn’t tested it with anyone PD, maybe it was only Carl that tested it, whichever way neither strap that they used are very good for those with limited dexterity. TBH even with reasonable dexterity they are a pain.

Even the 1 that they sell as an add on for £8.50 + p&p I could see there being problems? The metal slide pull that tightens looks like it could be awkward, also I noticed the model was a young woman.

The strap that we now have for hubby the little velcro attachments at the end can catch slightly on the plastic loop, getting it straight when tightening helps, with use it does ease . Hubby finds it easier than normal straps.

He’s found his own way of tightening it  as all PD sufferers find their own way of doing things.

I hope it works for your hubby, but if it’s not suitable it wasn’t a great deal to spend on trying something that may help? Also the other band can be switched back. We have replaced 4 bands 2 original and 2 new ,so if you or anyone else wants either an original band or the new design drop me a message with your address and I’ll post one or more to you.

Alternative Beechband strap

I’m sorry, Carl. Your device may or may not be wonderful, but your advertising, as well as your straps, needs looking at.

I have ordered some different straps from Amazon, elasticated ones. Hopefully they will be better than the originals!

Adverse effects for me. My anxiety was amplified and the consequent stress sent all my symptoms into overdrive. I have absolutely no desire to try it any longer, so I have packed it into its box and will, I think, give it to my PD Nurse who’s due to visit later this week so she can maybe pass it on to someone who would benefit.

Shame, really. I’d heard so many good reports.
