I’m new here. My dad has Parkinson’s disease and has recently been diagnosed with dementia. Since being prescribed rivastigmine, his sleep at night has become terrible, despite taking 8mg melatonin and 0.5mg Clonazepam. Does anyone have any experience of this and can offer any help. We are at our wits end and feel that we are failing him
Hello and welcome to the group @Hayleyd. I’m glad you found your way here, even though it’s under such difficult circumstances.
Firstly, know that you are not failing your dad. What you’re describing is incredibly hard, and many families reach this point feeling exhausted and helpless - that doesn’t reflect lack of care, it reflects how challenging Parkinson’s dementia can be.
It would be really important to flag this to his Parkinson’s nurse or consultant, or the memory clinic/dementia team if he’s under one.
They can look at whether rivastigmine is contributing, whether the dose needs adjusting, or whether an alternative approach is needed.
You might also find it helpful to speak directly to our helpline. Our trained experts and specialist nurses are used to talking through situations like this and can help you think through next steps or how to raise concerns with the medical team. You can call for free on 0808 800 0303 (9am and 6pm Monday to Friday, and 10am and 1pm on Saturdays).
Be kind to yourselves. Caring in this situation is unbelievably tough, and the fact you’re asking for help shows how much you care
