DVLA Lisence Issues

Good for you! The DVLA do not work speedily however.......be prepared for a frustrating few months and certainly don't expect an apology! In my view, there shouldn't even be a tick box for Parkinson's on the form in the first place.

Keep on the case and update us from time to time.

I think its a tricky one tbh. I mean PD affects everyone in such different ways I mean my OH was dx at 41 and hes been lucky in some respects as hes never suffered from a tremor, ever. He freezes when walking now but we've learnt a few tricks to get round that...but I know some people who have a severe tremor or cant move the foot of the side that's affected so I guess they have to monitor everyone which is fine, but I just wish they'd understand the disease better. Its the ignorance that frustrates more than anything.

They think when they see neurological disorder that your minds gone but it couldnt be further from the truth its the body that we tend to fight with more than the mind...the mind wants to do it but the body just cant. My OH tried explaining it once and the best analogy he came up with was imagining you've put your arm in tar and try moving it, then imagine its the whole right side of you....apart from the depression that comes with PD I haven't found any problems with my OH's mind ( apart from the side effects of Mirapexin which hes now off thank god!)

I get that the DVLA must be aware of PD but then they should also make sure that when you are assessed it is by a PD specialist, not some random doctor who probably only studied it for 3 days 20 years ago..

Okay Im getting off my soapbox now lol...wish me luck!

Your so right good luck !!

Ian

Thanks Ian, will let you know what happens big grin

Evening everyone, just a few thoughts on driving assessment.

Is it fair to ask the assessor what their qualifications are?

Does anyone know who employs them, are they the same people who conduct driving tests.?

Regarding challenging matters of opinion is it allowed or even ethical to record the event on a dash cam?

Is covert recording an offence or at least against the rules?

Are there any restrictions on giving commentary? thinking of the post which details the incident with a cyclist. What could be wrong with "Cyclist-approaching junction-giving cyclist time and room"

The bottom line is that as the driver you are responsible and erring on the side of caution is not an offence nor is it the same as lacking confidence or ability.

. I don't know what the law is on any of these things but i would like to film an assessment  and tell the assessor I was filming it I think you would have a fair go ! If I ever get one think it would be the way to go

Ian

My driving licence which was due to expire in 2022 now expires next Tuesday. As yet I have not received a replacement. I am aware that I may receive my new licence on time but I might not. On the assumption I don't what can I do in case I have to produce it to the Police or others.

I first notified the DVLA on the 5th April 2016. How long is it likely to take. The have examined my case and I am just waiting for the new 3 year licence to be sent out!

It will probably arrive in time. The DVLA have a habit of leaving it until the last minute! It took 3 months to get mine back. Not entirely sure why it expires next Tuesday, if, as you say, it runs out in 2022. Did they tell you to stop driving when you notified them in April? I would ring the medical section of the DVLA and explain your dilemma.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. My old licence expired when I was 70 which is in 2022. The DVLA have revoked that licence and made me send it back to them. It is that licence that now expires on Tuesday, In its place they will issue a 3 year medical licence which they say will start on Tuesday.

My concern is the lack of a physical licence which I haven't had now since posting off my original licence. I just feel I should have a physical licence that I can show to someone if required.

You can ask for a letter which states you are licenced to drive until anything different is decided.  I thought it said this on the latest version of the  letter they send at the end of the three .year period

The letter I have didn't appear to state I am licenced to drive. I did try to post a copy of the letter to this post but it would appear that this site doesn't allow it.

I've decided I am going to leave it till Tuesday and if my new licence doesn't arrive I will phone.

My driving licence arrived in plenty of time. No need for any worries. The only problem is that it has an EU flag on it so I assume somewhere down the line it will have to be replaced. confused

I haven't been on the forum for a while and have just been reading this thread with interest.  I was DX in March 2010 at the age of 69.  As the law requires I notified DVLA.  I won't bore you with all the letters and phone calls that went back and forth and an assessment by my GP, which we both thought was a waste of time, but I eventually received a new three year licence in October 2010.  I can see from this thread that I'm not the only one to be messed about!

I received a letter from DVLA Medical Group yesterday reminding me that my current licence expires in October.  I posted the completed forms back to them today.  I am extremely fortunate that my Parkinson's is well under control so I am hoping there won't be any problems getting a new licence this time.  Ever the optimist me...!

I am also waiting to see if I get my licence renewed, the current one expires on the 16th sept. My OH had to pester my consultant to get on with the medical report which dvla now say they have received.

A bit of research pointed me in the direction of Section 88 of the Road Traffic Act which says that if you feel confident that your application will not fail then you can continue o drive UNTILL dvla have completed their enquires (and presumably made a decision). it comes with a caveat that you should discuss it with your doctor.

Hi Biker John, I recently had to renew my three year licence also, and had no problem whatsoever. I am 64, have had parkinsons 6 years, so I don't think you will have any problems. Or have you had it back already?

All the best Sheila

My new driving licence came this week, the day before the letter telling me it had been renewed for another 3 years.  Much more straightforward than 3 years ago.  Three more years of driving and riding so I am OK now until I am 78.  I am not sure I will still be riding my motorcycle by then but I live in hope as it is something I enjoy doing very much!

I was actually quite impressed with DVLA this time.  After I had returned the completed forms I had a letter from DVLA confirming that they had received them and that they had written to my GP.  The letter included a section headed "Can I continue to Drive?"  This quoted Section 88 of the RTA 1988, as mentioned by drifflad above, and included the sentence "If you are asked by the police to produce your licence you may show this letter as proof of your application."

DVLA seem to have got their act together, at least as far as I am concerned, so I hope it all goes smoothly for others who are in this situation

Take care everybody (And please remember to "Think Bike" when you are driving. It might just be me!).

Cheers, John

Hi Biker John

Glad to hear you got your licence back ok, Iv had my hgv taken away but still have my bike and car licences though my sense of balance is bad so for me no two wheels any more :-(( I'm in the middle of turning my 1100 Honda into a trike so at least I can still feel the wind in my hair or what's left of it lol.

Anyway ride safe ride free.  Cc

Yes, pleased you've got your licence for another 3 yrs. The DVLA certainly sound more efficient and considerate! You must have had a positive report from your GP. Wonder why they didn't contact your neurologist?

All the best anyway.

Twinks.

I have was diagnosed in 2009, at the age of 47, but am managing reasonably well with current medication

In January this year my licence was revoked following my three year renewal and a subsequent letter from my doctor

I have discussed my medication with my consultant and recently had another review with him

He suggested prior to him writing to the DVLA he would like me to take the NHS driving test, who I should contact myself direct.

I did this previously around 4 years ago ( although my previous consultant requested this himself as he wanted reassurance )

I have looked on the local Website for the test center and the form states I need a driving licence,. Understandably so  as 50 minutes will be allocated for a drive around the area.

I am reluctant to pay out £90 if it will not change the DVLA decision

I take

6 Mg Roinirole daily

4 x Stelevo / Stanek 125mg/31.25mg/200mg

1x Rasagakine 1 mg

2 x Amantadine 100mg

2 x Clonazepam 500 micrograms at night

Any guidance would be very welcome as I feel I am between the DVLA , my consultant & the NHS test center.

I will respect the test centres  final decision but do feel I am fit to drive

Thank you

Kram
